A Sensational Discovery at 700 Meters off the Coast of Cuba Turned Out to Be Another Myth

In 2001, the world was swept up by sensational news: off the coast of Cuba, at a depth of 700 meters, massive underwater pyramids were allegedly discovered. Headlines screamed: “Ancient Atlantis Found?”, “A Sunken City Older Than Egypt!”

Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?

The problem is that no evidence for these claims was ever presented. No reports, no photographs, no publications in scientific journals. All that remained was a myth — just one of many.

Have you ever wondered where such stories come from? And why are we so eager to believe them?

Since ancient times, people have been inclined to believe that a great and wise civilization once existed in the distant past whose lost knowledge could have changed everything. It’s a convenient belief: it explains mysteries, inspires us, and gives us hope.

This is how the legend of Atlantis was born, as described by Plato. That legend has lived on for 2,500 years, even though the philosopher himself likely intended it as an allegory rather than a historical account.

Modern technologies — such as sonar and underwater drones — do, in fact, detect symmetrical or regular shapes on the seafloor. However, often, these turn out to be natural geological formations (such as sand ridges or basalt outcrops), remnants of sunken ships or structures, or simply distortions and noise in the imaging.

But humans are prone to seeing patterns where none exist. This effect is known as pareidolia.

A couple of straight lines underwater, and suddenly someone sees a “pyramid.”
