Chief Tynan’s Machinations Threaten Benson’s Squad In SVU Season 27

Olivia Benson’s squad has undergone an unusual amount of reconfiguring in just the first few episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) season 27. Detective Silva (Juliana Aidén Martinez) unceremoniously left between seasons without much explanation. Benson’s boss Chief McGrath – who was overtly antagonist – stepped down in season 25, and his role has been newly replaced this season.

The SVU season 27 premiere introduced new Chief of Detectives Kathryn Tynan (Noma Dumezweni), who seems effusively complimentary, yet Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) warns Benson (Mariska Hargitay) that Tynan is very hands on. By the end of the premiere, Tynan forces Benson to take a new detective, Jake Griffin (Corey Cott), under the guise of helping fill out the squad.

SVU season 27, episode 2 had two different endings – and in one, Griffin immediately betrays Benson’s trust by taking a cover meeting with Tynan after swearing loyalty to SVU. Now, Benson not only has an implanted detective she can’t trust, by Tynan cleverly entices a loyal detective away from Benson.

New Chief Of Detectives Kathryn Tynan Frames Velasco’s Transfer As Best For Everyone, But There Is An Insidious Intention

Tynan Is Trying To Isolate Benson From Her Loyal Squad

Rollins briefed Benson that Tynan, who spent the last decade building connections in Philadelphia, is very hands-on, and above all, Tynan demands loyalty. In Benson’s first interactions with Tynan at Captain Cragen’s funeral in SVU’s season 27 premiere, Tynan is almost oily in her praise.

Tynan is a savvy political operator, always getting her way but framing it as if she is doing favors for others – like pitching Griffin as a needed body for Benson’s team, when she is obviously implanting her person spy. Now, in episode 3, Tynan sets a meeting with Velasco and intentionally lets him believe he’s in trouble.

This type of rug-pulling makes Detective Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano) more likely to accept her new job offer of working undercover in San Diego, California. Tynan’s play is brilliant because she uses a carrot, not a stick. Velasco is genuinely torn between his loyalty to SVU but his passion for undercover work.

Tynan isn’t positioning herself as an enemy, but as a friend, which makes her all the more dangerous. Tynan is intentionally dismantling anyone she can’t control on Benson’s squad, but making it seem as if she’s just innocently helping her detectives achieve their dreams.

Tynan outright tells Benson she values communication, then surprises her with several helpful and borderline impossible favors for key witnesses in the case. Benson is grateful, but Tynan herself does not practice the communication she preaches. Ominously, she ends the meeting by dropping the fact that she knows about Fin’s missing gun, even if she won’t act on it.

Velasco Visits Fin In An Emotional Goodbye To Explain Why He Has To Leave

Velasco’s goodbye in Law & Order: SVU season 27, episode 3 with Benson and Fin (Ice-T) closes his arc with quiet emotional symmetry. Benson tells him not to stay out of loyalty but to follow where he’ll make the most impact — effectively releasing him.

Velasco admits that his undercover work reignites something in him that the day-to-day grind of SVU has drained. It’s not just adrenaline; it’s purpose. When he tells Fin that he’s no longer thinking about himself on the job, it marks a shift from self-redemption to genuine service.

Earlier in his career, he and Fin bonded over feeling like they’d done bad things and were trying to “balance the scales.” Now, Velasco isn’t chasing absolution — he’s simply doing what’s right. Taking the San Diego assignment to hunt a predator through undercover work feels like his true calling, where his skills and his conscience finally align.

Losing Velasco Is A Bigger Problem For Benson Than She Realizes, As Griffin Is Secretly A Mole

Tynan Wants To Manipulate Benson Into Running An All-Borough SVU Department

Chief Tynan meets Olivia Benson in Law & Order: SVU season 27 episode 1

Benson is running a leaner squad than usual – between Silva’s departure and Fin’s long recovery in SVU, Tynan wasn’t necessarily wrong when she said Benson needed more bodies. However, Tynan simultaneously praising how Benson runs her squad and its results, then insisting Benson doesn’t just need any detective, but one Tynan has a personal relationship with was a huge red flag.

It’s not surprising Griffin is a mole – it’s more shocking that SVU confirmed his disloyalty to Benson so soon. While we didn’t see what Griffin told Tynan in their secret meeting, he isn’t even surprised to see Tynan’s driver waiting outside his apartment. This means Benson has even fewer detectives she can trust than she realizes.

Whatever Tynan and Griffin’s motives are, going behind Benson’s back will never win her loyalty. Tynan told Benson she values communication and loyalty, but Tynan is doing the opposite. Tynan must be masterminding a way to make staying at Manhattan SVU less enticing to Benson by systematically dismantling what keeps Benson at SVU: the people around her.

Tynan has dispensed with Silva and now Velasco, while also implanting Griffin. If Tynan can coax Fin into retirement and Captain Renée Curry (Aime Donna Kelly) into returning to Internal Affairs, only Detective Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane) is left, and it will be easier for Tynan to convince Benson to run her new consolidated, all-borough SVU department.

Benson turned down Tynan’s offer, not looking to make a change now or in the near future. However, Benson’s logic to Velasco might be used against her: she urged Velasco not to stay at SVU out of loyalty, but go where he truly felt he could make the most difference.

Benson doesn’t — and shouldn’t — trust Tynan. Yet Tynan’s pitch that Benson could take the incredible work she’s done in Manhattan and streamline it across the entire city might be hard to ignore. Ironically, that may be the most effective way for Benson to make an impact going forward on Law & Order: SVU.
