Sound the alarms, Law & Order: SVU fans! Elliot Stabler is back for a limited time only.
On September 22, fans were stunned to hear that Christopher Meloni would return to the hit NBC drama ahead of the season 28 premiere on October 8, 2026, on NBC. He’s set to come back for the show’s milestone 600th episode, and Mariska Hargitay (who plays Olivia Benson) teased the exciting news with a photo of the duo on set.
“Happy 600…,” she wrote in the caption on Instagram.

Given that Stabler was beloved on Law & Order: SVU for the first 12 seasons, fans couldn’t hold back their excitement online.
“This is my version of winning the lottery,” one person wrote in the comments. “EVERYONE STAY CALM ITS HAPPENING 😭😭😭😭,” another shouted. “MY ELLIOT IS BACK!!! 😭❤️ I’m so happy, so excited, I can’t even put it into words! He’s finally back on the show, right where he belongs—where he never should have left in the first place 🥹😭😭❤️,” a different follower added.
Christopher left SVU in 2011 when his contract expired before season 13. He has since popped up multiple times on SVU o the years, with his last appearance on the season 27 premiere in September 2025. Christopher also starred in the spinoff series Law & Order: Organized Crime, which got canceled after five seasons in April 2026.
Christopher seemed excited to be back with the team!
“This and that and this and that and…them,” he wrote on Instagram on September 23.
