Finally, Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler’s long-overdue romance in Law & Order: SVU is now cleared to happen thanks to an official update about Chris Meloni’s NBC future. After giving long-time followers hope that the pair will finally act on their feelings for each other, Dick Wolf‘s iconic franchise has yet to deliver on that promised payoff for the characters. Admittedly, the bait-and-switch tactic has been frustrating for those strongly rooting for them to finally be together, especially since moving their relationship forward doesn’t seem to be a priority for the universe.
Law & Order: SVU: Will Benson & Stabler Ever Fall in Love?
3:16
Years after Meloni left Law & Order: SVU following co-spearheading it with Mariska Hargitay for over a decade, he returned. Instead of simply reclaiming his spot at the Manhattan SVU office, he was awarded with his own spinoff — Law & Order: Organized Crime, where he led a team of law enforcement officers tackling mobs and syndicates. This allowed for crossovers between the new show and Law & Order: SVU, which established a clear attraction between the former partners. Unfortunately, their romance has continued to be elusive, but a new NBC update inches people closer to a payoff.
How Organized Crime’s Cancellation Sets Up Benson & Stabler’s Romance Payoff

On the heels of the 2025-2026 TV cycle, Peacock and NBC announced that Law & Order: Organized Crime is officially cancelled after five seasons. Obviously, this is disappointing for several reasons, including how the show won’t be able to address any lingering plot lines left in season 4. That includes the mysterious status of Richard Wheatley. Amid the sadness of not being able to continue Law & Order: Organized Crime, ending the spinoff effectively forces NBC to be more intentional when it comes to reuniting Stabler and Benson.
When both Law & Order offshoots were still on the air, Wolf Entertainment had a lot of time to stage a crossover between the characters. That allowed them to stretch out the will-they/won’t-they situation, as they knew that they could develop their relationship incrementally. Now that it’s no longer the case, any kind of appearance from Meloni’s Stabler in Law & Order: SVU moving forward has to mean something. It can no longer be a short cameo with no real narrative purpose. This effectively speeds up the process of finally bringing the pair together.
Considering Melonis’s close relationship with Hargitay, the chances of him not coming back, even as a guest star, in Law & Order: SVU are very little to none. Even showrunner Michele Fazekas (via NBC) has admitted to wanting to bring him back, but backing the aforementioned argument, only if there’s a meaningful reason for it.
Why Benson & Stabler’s Romance Needs To Happen Sooner Rather Than Later

Much has been said about Benson and Stabler’s relationship in the Law & Order universe. Before Meloni’s exit, the conversation was dominated by questions about whether they had romantic feelings towards each other, considering that he was married and had children. However, when Wolf Entertainment revived that dynamic when the actor returned for Law & Order: Organized Crime, the discussions shifted from if they are going to be together to when they are going to be together. More than half a decade later, that question still persists.
While virtually everyone likes a will-they/won’t-they scenario, it’s long overdue to finally decide on the verdict for Benson and Stabler. Not only has this thing been going on for so many years now, both of them should be mature enough to not get caught up in this emotional dance. For what it’s worth, both Meloni and Hargitay have made it clear that they want this romance to finally happen. It really is up to NBC and Wolf Entertainment to follow through with it. They can easily make that happen when Law & Order: SVU returns for season 28.
