Two people were killed after a small single-engine plane crashed Monday afternoon in a rural area near Gainesville.
According to officers with the Levy County Sheriff’s Office the crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Northeast 30th Street and 114th Avenue, several miles from Williston regional Airport.
Authorities identified the vintage plane as a single-engine, a model used as a U.S. military training aircraft during World War II.
“You could throw a rock and hit my house right there,” Williston resident Harry Adams who witnessed the crash told WCJB. “I was sitting on the porch swing all day watching the planes when you see a star like that, it stands for the United States. That’s what it’s for. It’s a sad tragedy.”
Investigators have not yet released the identities of the two people who were killed in the crash, the aircrafts tail number, or the the owner of the plane.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to carry out the investigation.
