JASIN: Contract workers carrying out excavation works at the Golden Valley project site in Kampung Air Panas, Bemban, here were shocked after discovering an old aerial bomb weighing 227 kilogrammes yesterday afternoon.
Jasin district police chief Superintendent Lee Robert said police received a report regarding the discovery of the suspected bomb at the Jasin district control centre at about 3pm from a 52-year-old man who was working at the site.
“The complainant informed police that he had come across an object believed to resemble a bomb while carrying out excavation works at the project site.
“Following the report, officers and personnel from the Melaka police contingent headquarters Bomb Disposal Unit, together with members from the Jasin district police headquarters, were deployed to the location,” he said in a statement.
Initial investigations confirmed that the object was a 227kg aerial bomb, measuring between 27 and 36 centimetres in circumference and approximately 45 inches in length.
Lee said that further inspection found the bomb to be still active and in a corroded condition.
“The bomb is scheduled to be destroyed this morning in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure the safety of the public and surrounding areas,” he said.
He also advised the public not to speculate about the discovery of the bomb, believed to be a remnant from World War II, as it could cause public anxiety and disrupt public order.
Members of the public were also urged to give their full cooperation to the police throughout the bomb disposal operation.
